What will you be doing?
You'll lead, deliver and maintain a positive Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) culture across the workforce, ensuring the effective implementation of strategies and action plans that exceed client expectations and promote an incident‑free, continuously improving environment. This includes preventing injuries, work‑related ill‑health, damage to underground and overhead apparatus and domestic services, and driving safer behaviours.
You will provide strategic leadership for HSW, ensuring legal compliance, maintaining robust management systems, and strengthening client relationships. A key responsibility is instilling and promoting a right‑first‑time approach to all build quality, taking a visible leadership role when non‑conformities are identified and ensuring continuous improvement across all operational activities.
In addition, you will ensure effective risk management and implementation of appropriate controls for work within and around occupied commercial properties. You will support and coach senior management, develop high‑performing teams, and drive organisational learning and wellbeing, embedding proactive, resilient and responsible behaviours throughout the division.
Leadership & Oversight
- Provide visible HSW leadership across all operations, projects and contracts, setting clear expectations and influencing safe behaviours at every level.
- Lead, develop and coach HSW teams, ensuring competence, professional development, and accountability for delivery.
- Advise and support senior management in the implementation, improvement and continual strengthening of HSW management systems.
- Ensure Divisional and regional HSW strategies, policies, and initiatives are effectively embedded across all areas of responsibility.
Governance & Compliance
- Assure legal and regulatory compliance, including UK Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations and high‑risk operational activities.
- Coordinate and deliver internal and second‑party audits, and support external audits, accreditations and client assurance processes.
- Oversee audit findings, inspections and compliance reviews, ensuring corrective actions are effectively tracked, completed and embedded.
- Act as the senior escalation point for significant compliance issues, regulatory challenges or high‑impact findings.
Performance Management
- Monitor, analyse and report HSW performance metrics, identifying trends, emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Produce accurate statistical reporting and KPI analysis to support operational leadership and HSW strategic decision‑making.
- Benchmark performance across contracts, sharing best practice, lessons learned and improvement actions across the business.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the senior HSW representative for clients, regulators, external bodies and stakeholders, attending reviews, forums and strategic meetings.
- Build strong relationships with operational leaders, client teams, subcontractors and supply‑chain partners to strengthen HSW delivery.
- Support bid and tender submissions, client presentations and strategic initiatives by providing expert HSW input and assurance.
Continuous Improvement & Culture
- Drive continuous improvement through identification of best practice, innovation, digitalisation and process optimisation across SHEQ functions.
- Champion organisational initiatives focused on wellbeing and mental health, ensuring they are embedded into operational practice.
- Support development and continual enhancement of HSW tools, systems and processes to meet business needs effectively and efficiently.
Incident Management & Assurance
- Lead and oversee incident and near‑miss investigations, ensuring rigorous root cause analysis, effective corrective actions and shared learning.
- Escalate high‑potential incidents and significant risks to senior leadership, ensuring appropriate oversight and intervention.
- Ensure all learning from incidents is communicated across contracts, projects and the wider Division to prevent recurrence and enhance organisational resilience.
- Able to work autonomously and take ownership, responding proactively to operational requirements and emerging issues
- Communicates clearly and confidently, influencing senior stakeholders, clients and directors.
- Collaborative in approach, while able to challenge constructively and address poor performance when required.
- Uses data and analysis to inform decisions, driving continual improvement and high standards.
- Resilient, adaptable and capable of managing competing priorities across multiple contracts and changing business needs.
- Organises workload effectively, meeting deadlines while maintaining quality and focus.
- Demonstrates flexibility, initiative, drive and tenacity to deliver objectives and support business performance.
What you’ll bring

NEBOSH Diploma/NVQ6 (or equivalent)

Chartered IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards

Senior SHEQ/HSW leadership experience across multi‑site operations

Strong incident investigation and RCA capability

Competent in data analysis, reporting and Microsoft 365

Experience leading and developing high performing teams

Strong commercial awareness, ensuring strategic decisions support organisational performance and value
