    Where will you be working?

    At M Group Energy we’re enabling the energy essential to support our lives.

    We provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation. 

    This role will be within our Transmission & Renewables team. We design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400kV. Our teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity.   

    What will you be doing?

    We're looking for a Design Manager to join our Design team in our Annesley, Nottingham office on a Hybrid basis.
     
    You'll be leading and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams (civil, MEICA, process, geotechnical and others), ensuring designs meet scope, quality, time and budget requirements as well as providing day to day direction, priorisitation and oversign of design tasks and project deliverables.
     
    You'll be required to travel to Scotland once a month to better manage client expectations and help the operations team to understand any design related issues. 
     
    • Ensure the team has the appropriate tools, processes and support required to deliver right first time design outputs.
    • Ensure all designs comply with relevant technical standards, client specifications, and UK legislation, including CDM 2015.
    • Embed rigorous quality assurance, design checking and verification processes.
    • Validate that operational, constructability and safety considerations are incorporated into all design outputs.
    • Develop, implement and continuously improve design processes, workflows and governance frameworks.
    • Oversee design schedules, resource forecasting, change control, and the integration of design activity into wider project programmes.
    • Support risk identification, mitigation planning, and compliance with internal management systems.
    • Act as the primary technical interface for clients and external stakeholders, managing expectations, technical queries and approvals. 
    • Lead or participate in design coordination meetings, progress reviews, workshop sessions and multidisciplinary interfaces.
    • Ensure strong working relationships with delivery teams, commercial teams and project management colleagues.
    • Mentor, coach and develop design engineers, graduates and technicians, supporting professional growth.
    • Create a collaborative, accountable and positive team culture that promotes learning and high performance.
    • Support recruitment, succession planning, performance management and capability development across the design function.
    • To carry out any other duties as and when necessary to meet the varying demands of the business and satisfy customer needs.

    What you’ll bring: 

    • Have 15 years or more experience in OHL Design.
    • To maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of National Grid, SPEN, SSE, BSi, ENA and other relevant industry standards, UK legislation and CDM 2015.
    • Expert in PLS CADD and Tower software.
    • Degree (or equivalent) in Civil or Mechanical engineering.
    • Significant experience of leading multidisciplinary engineering design teams.
    • Proven track record in delivering complex design projects successfully.
    • Experience managing design schedules, risks, resources and change control processes.
    • Excellent communication, leadership and coordination capability.
    • Commercial awareness related to project finances and design decision‑making.
    • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional status.
    • Experience in major programme leadership, strategic planning or technical governance roles.
    • Experience in developing technical strategy, innovation programmes, or centre‑of‑excellence models.
