What is the role?
We are seeking a Senior Bid Writer to join our growing preconstruction team. You will play a critical technical authorship role, supporting the pursuit of major infrastructure projects across the UK. Your responsibilities will include shaping compelling narratives, driving win themes, and converting complex technical input into clear, persuasive proposals. Success in this role is measured through the quality and impact of written submissions, clarity and innovation in technical responses, and contributions to team learning and content development.
You will be based in a supportive team environment with Bid Managers and Estimators, working closely with Project Development Managers and Pre Contract Construction Managers. This role reports to the Head of Bid Management.
We are looking for someone who is driven, can work on their own initiative and has experience within a construction contractor or subcontractor environment. - Taking full ownership of written bid responses: interpreting client requirements, shaping solution structure and producing persuasive, well-crafted content.
- Define win themes, compliance matrices and content plans with engineering, estimating and delivery leads.
- Asking insightful questions to challenge assumptions, strengthen solutions and ensure our proposition is fully aligned to client needs
- Integrate safety, environmental and quality controls: statutory consents, land access/wayleaves, ecology and bird measures, crossings protection, traffic management and public safety near live assets.
- Support the development of graphics, diagrams or visual layouts that help make complex ideas simple and engaging.
- Draft clear responses to technical and commercial clarifications; set out positions on assumptions/exclusions, risk and contingency aligned to governance.
- Capture lessons learned, update the content library and continuously improve templates, tools and bid processes.
- Curate reusable OHL transmission content modules, case studies and proof points; maintain version control, traceability and auditability.
What you’ll bring
- Minimum five years’ writing experience delivering major tenders or frameworks for OHL works on the UK transmission network or comparable civil engineering or infrastructure industries.
- Exceptional writing skills: simplify complexity, structure compelling narratives and adapt tone to client expectations.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills; able to build relationships, facilitate workshops and influence thinking at all levels.
- A strategic mindset: not only write what is provided, but also shape solutions, challenge assumptions and add value.
- Strong facilitation skills; experienced in leading storyboards and reviews with senior SMEs and delivery leads.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word; strong skills in PowerPoint/Visio (or equivalent). Experience with InDesign/layout is advantageous.
- Willingness to travel to other offices or sites for workshops, interviews, or stakeholder engagement sessions when required.
- Familiarity with UK transmission owner environments and their standards and processes.
