Where will you be working?
At M Group Energy, we’re enabling the energy essential to support our lives.
We provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation.
This role will be within our Transmission & Renewables team. We design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400kV. Our teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity.

What will you be doing?
We’re looking for an Appointed Person in Lifting Operations to work on National Grid contracts in South West England and South Wales.
As an Appointed Person (CPCS A61) you’ll lead the planning, coordination, and execution of lifting operations on these projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working on live substation environments and be capable of managing complex lifts in high-risk, safety-critical environments.
- Lead and plan all lifting operations in accordance with National Grid procedures, LOLER 1998, and BS 7121 standards
- Produce and review Lifting Plans, RAMS, and task-specific risk assessments, ensuring alignment with National Grid’s safety management systems
- Identify lifting requirements from engineering drawings, construction plans, or on-site inspections
- Select suitable cranes, lifting accessories, and lifting methods, ensuring all equipment is certified and fit for purpose
- Coordinate with site teams, National Grid safety representatives, crane supervisors, slinger/signallers, and subcontractors to ensure safe and efficient lifting operations
- Conduct pre-lift briefings, toolbox talks, and lift supervision for standard and complex lifts, including tandem lifts and lifts near live equipment
- Ensure lifting operations do not interfere with live electrical apparatus, enforce exclusion zones, and maintain strict adherence to Permit to Work (PTW) systems
- Maintain accurate documentation, including lifting permits, inspection logs, and competency records
What you’ll bring
- Valid CPCS A61 – Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) certification
- Proven experience in lifting operations
- Experience with preparing lifting plans in AutoCAD format
- Competent in drafting and reviewing lifting plans, RAMS, and lift calculations
- Excellent understanding of lifting equipment, crane specifications, and safety margins in restricted environments
- Ability to lead and manage lift teams under pressure in time-sensitive, live working zones
- IT-literate – capable of using digital platforms for planning and reporting with sound knowledge of Microsoft Office products and SharePoint
Desirable:
- Proven experience in lifting operations within National Grid or DNO/TNO environments
- CSCS or EUSR (BESC / Persons) card – mandatory for NG sites
- Knowledge of National Grid technical standards, particularly SR163, GS6, and site-specific H&S rules
- Familiarity with NG document control systems
- Knowledge of working around SF6 equipment, transformer movements, or GIS compound lifts
- First Aid at Work, Manual Handling, and SMSTS – preferred
