    At M Group Highways, we’re supporting the safe transportation and movement of people across the UK.

    You’ll be joining our Highways maintenance team, as the UK’s number one highway maintenance contractor, our teams use the latest innovations to create effective solutions. We offer a range of services including planned and reactive maintenance and highway improvement schemes. 

    The It Starts With Me Lead is responsible for embedding, and advancing a proactive, safety culture across all contracts and teams. The role drives behaviours, systems, and leadership practices that ensure people go home safe and well, and the organisation continually improves its performance in health, safety, and wellbeing. The role acts as a strategic partner to project leaders, enabling them to integrate safety principles into everyday operations and decision‑making.

    What will you be doing?

    Strategic Culture Leadership

    • Assist in the development of and promote the organisation’s safety commitment – it starts with me, ensuring alignment with business goals and project delivery models.
    • Champion a culture of psychological safety, transparency, learning, and accountability across all projects and functions.
    • Shape and influence safety culture at all levels.

    Engagement, Coaching & Capability & Building

    • Coach project leaders, supervisors, and frontline teams to adopt and role‑model business values and best‑practice safety behaviours.
    • Working with contract to provide direction on ISWM activities and campaigns.
    • Promote safety conversations, and site engagements that focus on two-way dialog.
    • Promote and support cultural improvement and behavioural‑based safety programs.
    • Documents and promotes the outcomes agreed at the Divisional ISWM SteerCo meetings.

    Learning & Continuous Improvement

    • Facilitate and support excellence workshops (Human Organisational Performance), learning teams, and reflective learning activities across projects.
    • Develop and track cultural indicators and proactively identify opportunities for improvement.
    • Promote a Just / Fair Culture model across the business.
    • Report on cultural maturity, trends, and insights.
    • Use data to inform decision‑making and recommend targeted interventions.
    • Promote ISWM considerations are integrated into project lifecycles from bid stage through execution and close‑out.

    Collaboration & Stakeholder Influence

    • Build strong relationships across the senior team, delivery leads, subcontractors, and client organisations.
    • Influence and support senior team to make evidence‑based decisions that strengthen culture.
    • Engage internal (group safety engagement manager) and external partners, regulators, and industry bodies to benchmark and share learning.

    What you’ll bring

    • Good understanding of safety management systems, risk assessment, incident investigation, and regulatory frameworks.
    • Awareness or knowledge of Human & Organisational Performance (HOP), behavioural science, or organisational psychology.
    • Experience applying learning methodologies such as learning teams, appreciative inquiry, or after‑action reviews.
    • Ability to analyse safety culture metrics, qualitative insight, and operational data.
    •  Ability to facilitate groups, workshops, and cross‑functional sessions.
    • Coaching and influencing skills to shape leadership behaviours at all levels.
    • Ability in storytelling and communicating safety through engaging narratives.
    • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills, particularly in complex project environments.
    • Proven track record in safety, organisational culture, or operational leadership roles within project‑based industries.
    • Demonstrated success in driving culture change programmes.

    Desired Qualifications

    • NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 6, or equivalent H&S qualification.
    • Training or certification in HOP, behavioural safety, leadership coaching, or organisational change.
    • Project management exposure (e.g., APM, PRINCE2) to understand project lifecycles.
