Where will you be working?
Our Rail team manages a wide range of specialist rail engineering works and projects, delivering civils, track, power, electrical solutions and station structures across all rail routes in the UK.

As part of our Southern Rail Business Unit, you'll play a key role in delivering maintenance, reactive and capital works programmes across the rail network. Working closely with Contracts Managers and operational teams, you'll help ensure resources are deployed safely, efficiently and productively to support successful project delivery.
What will you be doing?
As Works Manager, you'll provide day-to-day leadership and management of our operational workforce, acting as the vital link between site teams and senior operational management.
Workforce Leadership
- Lead and manage General Foremen, Site Supervisors, Operatives and skilled labour resources across the Southern Rail portfolio.
- Promote a positive safety culture and drive high standards of performance and behaviour.
- Maximise workforce productivity, utilisation and engagement.
- Support training, mentoring and development of supervisors and operatives.
Operational Delivery
- Ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with programme requirements.
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials and subcontract resources to meet operational demands.
- Support Contracts Managers in achieving programme, quality and financial objectives.
- Act as the escalation point for labour, resource and operational issues.
Resource Management
- Manage workforce planning and deployment across multiple workstreams and routes.
- Coordinate daily, weekly and possession-based resource requirements.
- Monitor labour availability and support recruitment, succession planning and skills development.
- Ensure workforce competencies, training and certification requirements are maintained.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Network Rail standards, company procedures and statutory requirements.
- Promote adherence to RAMS, permits, briefings and safe systems of work.
- Conduct regular site visits, safety tours and operational inspections.
- Lead toolbox talks, workforce briefings and engagement sessions.
- Support investigations, corrective actions and lessons learned activities.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor labour performance, productivity and efficiency.
- Ensure accurate recording of labour, plant and productivity information.
- Manage absence, performance and disciplinary matters in line with company procedures.
- Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support the implementation of new systems, technologies and ways of working.
What you'll bring
We're looking for a strong operational leader with experience managing rail delivery teams and a passion for safety, performance and people development.
You will have:
- Proven experience leading operational teams within the rail industry.
- Strong people management and workforce planning experience.
- A good understanding of Network Rail standards and rail industry requirements.
- Experience coordinating labour and resources across multiple projects or workstreams.
- Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience conducting site inspections, safety tours and workforce briefings.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and operational challenges effectively.
- A commitment to health, safety, quality and continuous improvement.
- Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- PTS certification.
- SMSTS or equivalent site management qualification.
- Experience delivering maintenance, reactive and capital works programmes.
- Knowledge of workforce competence management systems.
