Where will you be working?
We help our clients safeguard the water supply, improve environmental performance and manage demand for future generations. We enhance and extend asset life, ensuring compliance with water quality and environmental standards. This role will be within our water and wastewater capital project delivery team. Our teams deliver large-scale capital programmes aimed at keeping water infrastructure resilient for the long-term while protecting the environment.

We are currently seeking to appoint a Head of Operations (Civils) to manage the operational elements of our Southern Water Capital frameworks: Strategic Delivery Partner and Delivery Partner. These are key contracts for M Group Water and Southern Water are a key M Group client in the water sector. These frameworks are expected to grow from their current annual revenue of £20m to in excess of £50m per annum during the current regulatory period. The frameworks comprise both water and wastewater programmes / projects, examples include:
• Rising mains replacement
• New pumping stations
• Deep drainage
• Tunnelling
• Service reservoirs
• New and replacement large water main projects
• Event Duration Monitoring programme
Under the Strategic Delivery Partner and Delivery Partner frameworks, we also undertake a proportion of Southern Water’s water mains replacement programme but that is managed by a separate operational lead reporting in to the Contract Director as the work is delivered quite differently to the above work.
As the Head of Operations (Civils) you will be accountable for the health, safety and wellbeing of the operational personnel working on your programmes / projects. You will be responsible for delivering the work within your remit on time and within budget, including delivering to profitability and cash targets.
You will need to form a close relationship with key client contacts, successfully delivering against their requirements, including contract KPIs. End user and customer satisfaction is important as is the successful and prompt close out of programmes / projects both operationally and commercially. You will support the Contract Director in ensuring sufficient resources are available to deliver the work, both employee and supply chain, and in maintaining high levels of employee engagement.

What you'll be doing
- Managing the development of the delivery strategy for the programmes and projects within your remit, including compliance to the highest SHEQW standards, with a focus on risk and continuous improvement.
- Delivering to specific revenue and profitability targets for each financial year and being responsible for meeting cash targets.
- Overseeing the operational resource and activities within your area of responsibility, driving efficiency whilst meeting contract KPIs / SLAs.
- Supporting delivery of the contract business plan and helping drive growth within our frameworks and more generally with the client.
- Ensuring delivery of high levels of customer and end-user satisfaction as well as client internal stakeholders.
- Identifying and supporting implementation of improvements, efficiencies, and cost savings to maximise contract performance.
- Optimising cashflow within your area of responsibility and working proactively with contract teams and clients to ensure payments are received in accordance with contractual terms.
- Helping build a strong supply chain community to ensure we can deliver our client’s needs.
- Understanding disputes and ensuring they are resolved professionally and timely with clients and suppliers.
- Guiding, coaching and mentoring direct and indirect reports, supporting the establishment of a robust succession plan within your area of responsibility.
- Understanding the key stakeholders and building strong relationships with them to instil confidence.
- Collaborating with contract / project teams, supporting their management and adhering to M Group company values.
- Striving for the adoption of best practice and continuous improvement in all elements of your responsibilities.
